How does this differ from a welder?
A welder mainly joins metal; a fitter is responsible for assembly, dismantling, pipework and repair as a whole, using welding as one part of that.
Is lathe work required?
Not required, but a serious advantage if the ship has a machine tool. When a spare part cannot wait for the next port, this skill saves the job.
