Technician
Technical maintenance and fault-finding on board: refrigeration, ventilation, plumbing and general upkeep. On cruise ships this is the hotel side's technical leg; offshore it is operational support.

Is my shore-side technician experience enough?
Often a good starting point. Ship systems differ from shore, but a grounding in plumbing, refrigeration and electrics transfers directly.
How does this differ from engine ratings?
Engine ratings are responsible for the main and auxiliary engine room; technical staff look after general ship maintenance and comfort systems. The rank structure and certificates differ too.
