Working on River Vessels
Passenger and cargo vessels operating on Europe's inland waterways. The Rhine, the Danube and their connected canals are the best-known routes.
01Life on board
Different from the sea. The vessel runs close to shore, the view changes constantly, and phone and internet access is usually uninterrupted. On passenger vessels the hotel department dominates; crews are smaller than on ocean-going ships.
02Who it suits
For those with a hotel and catering background and for people not ready for the isolation of ocean voyages. On European routes a second language such as German is a serious advantage.
03Contract and working pattern
Work is seasonal; busy from spring to autumn, with routes sometimes closing in winter. Contracts are arranged around the season.
